“It’ll take years to figure out the right command,” said to the Captain, shrugging her shoulders. “There has to be another way. Roy, have you found anything else on those dials?”

Roy speedily began touching the dials in every way possible but to no avail. Then they started searching for any other device by which they could enter a command. Roy touched the surface beneath the dials, and they got what they were looking for.

“Bingo!”

A series of purple circles appeared above and below the screen. Lines of writing ran vertically between them.

“This looks like a menu screen.”

The purple circles lit up as Roy ran his finger over them. He pushed them one by one. Different writing appeared running from top to bottom. They examined the long strings of letters. When nothing happened, they went to the second screen, which was also full of text.

“Don’t they have any figures or pictures on their screens? It’s hard to make sense of anything.”

They pushed all of the purple circles and entered all the screens. Still, it didn’t get them anywhere. This dragged on for a while, and the humans lost focus, having gotten over their initial excitement. They left the work to the robots and Omni and went off to their respective corners. The robots kept trying as the humans went to sleep.

When Shanel woke up and went to the command center the next morning, the screen was completely full of writing. They’d quit trying. Roy joined her as she looked at the screen.

“Good morning.”

“Good morning, Roy. How’s it going?”

“We tried all the options on the screen, but we did not get anywhere.”

“That’s a bummer. Clearly, we need to change our approach.”

“If you have a suggestion, I’d love to hear it.”

“I can’t think of anything at the moment. I’ll let you know when I do.”

Shanel’s plan for the day was to fix her ioncycle, though she really didn’t feel like it. She was fond of the ioncycles and felt terrible for smashing one up so bad. She called Rolf and sent him a list of everything she wanted to do that day. Then she went to the foyer and led her ioncycle outside. It followed her slowly on its tiny wheels. The captain wanted them to keep a low profile, so she went to behind the machines next to the building.

Soon Rolf showed up with her tools.

“You hiding over there?”

Lera laughed as she stepped out from behind Rolf.

“Good morning,” said Shanel as she got to removing a panel. “I was just thinking about how Lera didn’t say anything about me wrecking my ioncycle. I wonder if she’s feeling okay…”

“Ha ha ha…You saved our lives back there. There’s a limit to jokes.”

“You’re bringing me to tears.”

“The dents are easy but how are you going to fix the gashes?”

“Don’t worry. When I’m done, it’ll be like new.”

“I’ve got nothing to do right now. Want me to help out?”

“Aw, now I’m gonna cry.”

Together the three of them opened the lid of the crushed left pod and emptied its contents.
